Theater Associate

Kalapriya is looking for a person to direct and conduct a middle school theatre program at one of our partner schools. The individual must be able to work with middle school students in an underserved magnet school. This assignment is for the academic year 2023-2024 from mid-October till mid-May, when two performances are scheduled. The script will be provided. It is from a book for middle schoolers studying the history of civil rights in their social studies classes. The book is a fictionalization of the Indian freedom struggle under Gandhi’s leadership and gives the performers an opportunity to understand the Gandhian nonviolent movement for freedom as the most courageous act. It also addresses segregation as exhibited by the caste system.

The selected individual will need to work with about 20 students between grades 4-8 in 90-minute sessions 2 afternoons a week doing the casting, direction, and production. It will also involve working with the principal and staff of the school and with Kalapriya advisors and staff. Compensation is competitive based on prior experience and will be made monthly based on hours spent in the classroom and reasonable tasks in preparing for the classroom work.
