Mridu Sekhar
Dr. Mridu Sekhar has been a resident of Chicago for almost 6 decades and is passionate about serving all Chicagoans. She has served on the board of Kalapriya since 2011, and as board President since 2015. In addition to being on the board of Kalapriya she serves on the boards of The Bhuvana Foundation which operates a school for Tribal Children in South India and We Are One Humanity, a platform for those who want to speak for truth, compassion, and essential human rights. She has also served on the boards of The Chicago Children's Choir (currently called Uniting Voices Chicago) and The Indo American Democratic Organization.
Dr. Sekhar has been especially committed to bringing meaningful arts experiences to children in underserved neighborhoods through outreach programming in Chicago Public Schools. She believes that exposure to music, dance, and storytelling can spark creativity, build confidence, and broaden young people's understanding of the world. Her dedication to ensuring equitable access to arts education, reflects her deep conviction that every child deserves the opportunity to experience the transformative power of the arts.
As Board President, Dr. Sekhar has played a key leadership role in guiding Kalapriya's mission to share the beauty and diversity of South Asia with students and communities throughout Chicagoland. Under her leadership, the organization has expanded its impact. Innovative performances, artist residencies, in-studio dance and music classes, and outreach programs that connect thousands of students with professional artists and cultural traditions from across South Asia.
Dr. Sekhar is deeply committed to preserving cultural heritage while fostering meaningful connections across communities. Her vision and dedication have helped strengthen Kalapriya's role as a vibrant cultural institution that celebrates South Asia's artistic traditions and inspires audiences of all ages.
